Students of jazz music and design started a creative collaboration: under the title “Tales of tomorrow”, we wrote jazz pieces and designed digital visualisations and posters for a creative performance.

Planning the 90th Vocal Night
At the end of every semester, the students of HfMdd, organise the “Vocal Night” – a night where the jazz music students present the jazz pieces they wrote during the semester. It was our task to plan the whole performance: location, performance schedule, band and public relations.
We started brainstorming the first ideas together. To distribute the tasks, we formed small groups of one designer and up to two musicians each. This allowed for sharing experiences and having fruitful discussions.
Poster design drafts
For my poster, I decided to set the focus on typography. I tried different fonts, colours and backgrounds in various combinations.
My final choice was the draft on the lower right corner, which would be refined it in the next step.
Refinement of the design
In order to give the poster a jazz vibe, I chose Phosphate Inline as a font: I also tried colours in red, blue, yellow and black for that.
The arrangement of the letters turned out to be a challenging task (especially for the letters to be readable), so I’ve tried various formations.
Final poster design
I ended up with two versions for my design: One with mixed letters and cold colours, one with sorted letters and warm colours.
Illustrations for the performance
As a collective process, Kari and I worked together on a jazz piece for the 90th Vocal Night. Together, we created “4 Walls No Door” – we brainstormed the topic, she wrote the lyrics and the music while I designed the illustrations for the performance. To this end, I drew 5 different illustrations and added an animation with Adobe Animation.
The 90th Vocal Night in the OKA
We chose the OKA (Objekt Klein A) in Dresden as a location for our performance. All the students created jazz pieces with different meanings under the same title “Tales of tomorrow”.
It was a creative night with a large variety of impressions.
